Preventing H1N1 with Face Masks & Respirator

Apart from H1N1 face masks or swine flu respirators, here are some additional flu prevention tips that you can practise:-

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
  • People who are sick with an influenza-like illness (ILI) (fever plus at least cough or sore throat and possibly other symptoms like runny nose, body aches, headaches, chills, fatigue, vomiting and diarrhea) should stay home and keep away from others as much as possible, including avoiding travel, for at least 24 hours after fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Fever should be gone without the use of fever-reducing medicine).
  • Avoid close contact (i.e. being within about 6 feet) with persons with ILI.
Pregnant women and those with illnesses should practise face masks especially being in crowded areas like shopping malls, in bus coaches, at airports and in airplanes.

H1N1 Flu

H1N1 is like a common word in many countries and from the originally called pig flu, it has evolved into swine flu and this new term H1N1. As of November 8, 2009, over 503,536 cases of H1N1 flu infections have been reported worldwide. With most people recovering smoothly after the flu infection, those with existing ailments have a higher chance of dying from H1N1. Worldwide, at least 6,260 deaths has been linked to H1N1 virus.

Prevention is still better than cure. Therefore, if going on flights or accessing congested areas such as subway or train stations, then it is better to wear a flu mask, of high quality such as N95.

On my trip to Tokyo last week, i've noticed some interesting face masks including some that can provide moisture to the wearer. Before going into the subway, i even saw a mom who gave her son 2 layers of 3 ply face masks to wear... but i'd rather stick to the one that has been proven to be able to filter out 99% of the infections/bacteria such as N95 8210 model or N95 8110s (suitable for kids).
